Current research interests
My long-term goal is to help develop tools and analysis that support better and practical management of biodiversity. My current research interests include:
Past experience
I recently retired from the Canadian federal public service and am now working to refresh my academic expertise. In the public service, I spent several years as a director with the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development (the “environmental watchdog” on the federal government), leading projects on topics including offshore oil and gas drilling, progress on meeting climate change goals, environmental monitoring, and green infrastructure. During this time, I did a secondment at Statistics Canada, where I helped develop a new set of Canadian environmental indicators. Prior to joining the public service, I taught at Trent University and worked with the consulting firms, RFI and ESSA Technologies.
My long-term goal is to help develop tools and analysis that support better and practical management of biodiversity. My current research interests include:
- Combining ecological and economic perspectives, building on the strengths of each discipline.
- Assessing how ecosystem services vary among different systems, and what lessons can be learned from the management experiences. I am particularly interested in cost-effective ways to monitor ecosystem services over time.
- Examining how ecosystem services are generated, and how and to whom the benefits flow. I am especially interested in the more abstract benefits, such as cultural benefits and protection of species at risk.
