Research interests
My research addresses different environmental problems with the river basin as a common scale. Rivers and streams are influenced by the landscapes through which they flow. Understanding the links between the land and the fluvial phase is crucial in order to identify threats on water quantity and quality, which will impact biodiversity and ecosystem services.
Always interdisciplinary, my research has followed different approaches: from statistically-based methods to identify and understand the temporal and spatial distribution of contamination sources, to the deterministic modeling of the basin dynamics. In my postdoctoral stage, I am interested in the provision of ecosystem services by river basins. Even in landscapes receiving large human pressures, there are areas which have a valuable role since they are essential to sustain a particular level of services delivery. Riparian areas are important interfaces between the land and the fluvial phase. I am interested in identifying the role of these areas on the provision of hydrological ecosystem services and their effects on biodiversity. Eventually, I aim to assess the interactions among the multiple services provided by river basins in order to maximize efficiency and minimize tradeoffs arising from possible management interventions.
