Research Interests
As a professionally trained dancer, I have always liked to explore movement and my relationship to space and time. My physical and artistic exploration of movement has shaped my interest in science. I feel a real kinship with the study of biogeochemical cycling and ecology. These fields focus on understanding systems, linkages, and movement. Nutrients, like phosphorus (P), flow through the environment but change their properties depending on what they are coupled with, just as dancers change for partners and the space they are in.
I have found a way to embrace my love of art, science, and policy through a focus on sustainable resource and environmental management. Agriculture and food systems are especially interesting and I have chosen to focus my PhD work on P management.
P is a scarce resource that is essential to food production, but in too large quantities P can also cause pollution in water bodies. More sustainable P management is essential for food security and pollution abatement. My current research explores the role of local context (biophysical, cultural, economic, and political) in shaping past, present, and future use of P resources. The objective is to help us (people) make better decisions about which P management strategies are most appropriate in particular places.
Although I explore many facets of P sustainability, I am passionate about exploring the role of cities in P management and investigating the role of urban and peri-urban agriculture in P recycling.
Finally, I haven’t forgotten my love of art and dance. I use this interest to find other ways to communicate findings to peers, decision-makers, and the general public.
