Bennett Lab Code of Conduct
Academia has a history of non-inclusivity. We are working to change that. Bennett Lab members are dedicated to a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of race, ethnic background, citizen status, gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, physical appearance, body size, race, or belief. We do not tolerate harassment by or of members of our community. See also McGill University’s Discrimination and Harassment Policy.
We value the participation of every member of our community. To ensure that every lab member and collaborator has a positive experience unhindered by challenges caused by non-inclusive behaviour, and is treated with respect and courtesy the Bennett Lab has developed a Code of Conduct that details the expectations and responsibilities of each member, guest or representative of the lab:
This document is an abbreviated version of a more extensive Code of Conduct for the Bennett lab that includes further support and educational resources, and which will be made available to all members, guests and representatives of the lab.
This document is flexible and subject to change. We welcome feedback and comments from our community to improve it. For further information, advice or resources to help achieve the above expectations, please contact Elena.
Material in this code of conduct is derived from the Bahlai Lab Code of Conduct by Dr. Christie Bahlai and the Bahlai lab team, the Whittaker Lab Code of Conduct by Dr. Kirstie Whitaker and the Whitaker Lab team, the Adair Lab Code of Conduct by Dr. Carol Adair and the Adair Lab team, and from the DIB Lab Code of Conduct by Dr. Titus Brown and DIB lab team.
- We expect everyone in the Bennett lab to help ensure that all members feel comfortable, safe and accepted, and help ensure our lab remains an inclusive space for everyone.
- Microaggressions are the everyday slights, indignities, put-downs and insults that people (particularly members of marginalized groups) may experience in their day-to-day interactions with individuals who are often unaware that they have engaged in an offensive or demeaning way. We expect all lab members to be able to recognize microaggressions and take proactive steps to prevent them occurring.
- We expect that those leading lab meetings and those attending will treat these meetings as roundtable events, where everyone is provided with space and time to speak and is treated with respect and courtesy.
- We encourage lab members to ask for constructive feedback from one another. When providing feedback, we expect each lab member to be considerate of the person to whom they are providing feedback. A person’s culture, personality and background can all affect how they respond to feedback. Furthermore, all lab members should treat providing or receiving feedback as a learning experience, which should be honest but not hurtful.
- While we encourage lab members to help one another with skills and knowledge, we expect both the person asking for help and the person being asked to be mindful and respectful of each other’s time and workload.
- Many lab members are actively building their careers and/or looking for opportunities to advance their careers. We expect all lab members to support one another’s career aspirations.
